Lynn Nottage, the Pulitzer Prize winning author of such plays as "Intimate Apparel" and "Fabulation", continues her tradition of thoughtful and funny plays with "Crumbs From the Table of Joy." It’s 1950 and Godfrey Crump has just lost his wife. Finding solace in Father Divine and the Peace Mission Movement, he moves his teenage daughters to Brooklyn. Told through the eyes of his 17-year-old daughter Ernestine, "Crumbs From the Table of Joy" aims straight at the heart in a story that deals with boundaries of race, gender, and society.
HEARTBREAK HOUSE a comedy by George Bernard Shaw
Directed by David Grapes, featuring guest artist Jim Mezon
Langworthy Theatre
October 17-20 at 8pm; October 21 at 2pm
Can a play which debates serious issues still be a laugh riot? In Shaw’s case, the answer seems always to be “yes.” Set in the Bohemian country manor of the elderly Captain Shotover (played by the Canadian theatre and film actor Jim Mezon), the play features a family full of odd ducks, daffy servants, and bewildered houseguests marooned at the manor as the world begins to shift around them. Shaw’s wit is extra sharp here the author weaves pointed discussions on social theory, sexual conflict, greed, capitalism, intergenerational relationships, and other Shavian themes into a brilliant play.

Into Sally’s life come a parade of colorful characters, including a rich German politician, a young Jewish man struggling with his identity, a teacher from London, and, of course, the all-knowing, all-seeing Master of Ceremonies.

Set amidst the opulence of 18th century Vienna, Amadeus is the story of one man’s obsession. Antonio Salieri is revered as the finest composer in the land. Not only is he the court composer, he is convinced his music reigns supreme that is until Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart appears. Brutally confronted with the limitations of his own talent, Salieri curses God for giving musical genius to the brash and unconventional Mozart. Salieri does everything in his power to sabotage his rival’s career, hoping Mozart’s heavenly music will fade into obscurity. Amadeus won the 1981 Tony Award for Best Play on Broadway, and ran for more than 1000 performances. This magnificent play is arguably one of theatre’s greatest dramas.
