Check out 20 helpful ways to go “green” at school and in life. It’s no wonder the University of Northern Colorado was recently named one of four recipients of the city of Greeley’s first Environmental Stewardship Awards.

UNC's Green Guide

Did you know:
One ton of recycled
plastic saves:

• 30 cu. yds. landfill space
• 16.3 barrels (685 gal.) oil
• 5,774 kwh’s energy

The United States goes through 2.5 million plastic bottles every hour.

Enough plastic bottles are thrown away every year to circle the earth four times!

January 21-February 27
Reception January 21, 4 – 6 pm
Gene Hoffman: Pick of the Litter  Mariani Gallery
The consummate recycled-art artist, Gene Hoffman embraced the concept of “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure”.
His materials were cast-off and recycled: rusted cans, old cardboard, discarded plastics. Whatever he found was turned into beautifully crafted 3-dimensional sculptures. His tools were simply a knife, straightedge and small hammer, all very used. “Rusted cans are just beautiful,” he once said. “I’ll cut them apart and reshape them and sometimes it will reveal different colors ... and old lettering will be visible. It’s just beautiful.” Gene was a professor emeritus in graphic design at the College Performing and Visual Arts at UNC. His unusual and energetic teaching style endeared him to many students over the years. After retirement from teaching, he assembled a studio in an old horse stable at his Livermore home and was a prolific artist up to his death on February 24, 2005.

International Film Series: Winged Migration
students-adults

For eighty million years, birds have ruled the skies, seas and earth. Each spring, they fly vast distances. Each Fall, they fly the same route back. This film is the result of four years following their amazing odysseys, in the northern hemisphere and then the south, species by species, flying over seas and continents." — Jacques Perrin (from “Winged Migration”)

Long one of France's most respected producers (Academy Award Winners “Z” and “Black and White in Color”) and actors (“Z,” “Cinema Paradiso,” “The Young Girls of Rochefort,” “Donkey Skin” and “The Brotherhood of the Wolf”), Jacques Perrin has more recently had a highly successful career creating films about nature, including “Le Peuple Singe” (monkeys) and “Microcosmos” (insects) and set in exotic locales (“Himalaya”). Now with his penultimate film "Winged Migration" Perrin takes on his greatest challenge yet: exploring the mystery of birds in flight. Five teams of people (more than 450 people, including 17 pilots and 14 cinematographers) were necessary to follow a variety of bird migrations through forty countries and each of the seven continents. The film covers landscapes that range from the Eiffel Tower and Monument Valley to the remote reaches of the Arctic and the Amazon. All manner of man-made machines were employed, including planes, gliders, helicopters, and balloons, and numerous innovative techniques and ingeniously designed cameras were utilized to allow the filmmakers to fly alongside, above, below and in front of their subjects. The result is a film of staggering beauty that opens one's eyes to the ineffable wonders of the natural world.

Films are screened in Lindou Auditorium, lower level of Michener Library,
on the West Campus of UNC.
Admission: $3 for UNC students; $5 for Non-students

Are You Wearing Green? The Impact of Fashion on the Environment
                 students/community
Most of us are aware that we need to practice the three Rs of environmentalism – reduce, reuse, recycle.  We know we should drive fuel efficient, low emission vehicles; we should recycle newspapers, aluminum cans, glass bottles, and even our old computers; we need to weatherize our homes and reduce our water consumption.  But do we consider the environment when we buy our clothing? Probably not.

The Environmental Protection Agency reports that the average American throws away more than 68 pounds of clothing and textiles each year.  With a current average lifespan of 77.6 years, each person in the United States today will contribute 5,277 pounds of textile waste during his or her lifetime.  The Census Bureau projects a current U.S. population (as of 1/20/09) of 305,652,585; and that equates to 1,612,928,691,045 pounds of clothing/textile waste being produced by persons living in the US today!

Your wardrobe may make a positive fashion statement, but it could also be contributing to a negative environmental statement!  Learn how when UNC Environmental Studies students present their research on the environmental impact of the fashion and textile industries.  Then see some fun ways to recycle during a style show featuring clothing designed from deconstructed, reconstructed T-shirts. After the show, dance to the earthy reggae/jam sounds of Trichome.

Location will be the Garden Theatre if the weather permits, otherwise it will be in the UC Ballrooms.

Fee: A non-perishable food item to donate to the Weld County Food Bank

The Children's Water Festival in Greeley is a free event for 4th grade students in Weld, Morgan and Adams Counties.   The 2009 theme “Wild About Water” will showcase how wildlife and water work together in our natural environment. The Central Colorado Water Conservancy District and the City of Greeley Water Conservation and Storm water programs are co-sponsoring a Children's Water Festival. The water festival brings water professionals from around Colorado to provide presentations and activities about water, conservation, human health, and aquatic life while covering a wide range of curriculum areas including language arts, math, science, social studies, visual art, and health. The festival goals are to teach students that water is an essential, limited resource and that they can take action. The event provides teachers with materials and lessons that they can use for years to come.
