About the College of Performing and Visual Arts at the University of Northern Colorado

Regardless of your area of interest, you probably know UNC arts graduates. If you have seen a Broadway musical or a national tour of a Broadway production, listened to Texaco's "Live at the Met," visited an art museum, taken in a show at your local movie theater, or just tuned in your TV at home, you will have witnessed the UNC Arts in action. If you have participated in public school music, drama or art classes, chances are your teacher earned an arts degree from UNC, because we prepare more public school arts teachers than any college or university in the state or region. Fifteen of the nation's nationally accredited music schools are led by UNC prepared music administrators, a phenomenal number for a university of this size. Two of the University of Northern Colorado's Programs of Excellence reside in the College of Performing and Visual Arts: Music, and Theatre and Dance. The University of Northern Colorado is known throughout the United States and abroad as a significant place to study the arts.

The College of Performing and Visual Arts, a comprehensive professional college, is comprised of three entities: the School of Music, the School of
Visual Arts, and the School of Theatre Arts and Dance. These three programs have long and distinguished histories, beginning with the School of Music's establishment in 1895, and that of Visual Arts in 1899. The Theatre Arts summer program, known as the Little Theatre of the Rockies, began in 1934, though theatre activities existed from the school's founding. These programs were brought together as a college in 1977. The Dance program joined the College in 1992.

The major goal of the Arts College is to challenge each student with a professionally-based education that provides a top level of preparation for success in a highly competitive marketplace. We believe our students are finding this success. Overall, 95% of UNC arts graduates are employed or are in advanced study within one year of graduation. Recent studies of alumni satisfaction show that 98% of UNC arts alums would recommend UNC to prospective students.

The College currently serves nearly 1200 arts students. The 40% growth of UNC arts programs in one decade, from 723 majors in fall 1990 to 1,096 majors in fall 2000, reflects the reputation and prestige UNC arts programs enjoy both in-state and out-of-state. Current enrollment in CPVA is more than 10% of UNC's total student population.
